What is Brand Residency
Brand Residency is a thematic editorial season in which a brand enters the media not as an advertiser, but as a co-author of meaning. It is not sponsored content, not native advertising, not branded content. Slow Made City is the first Bulgarian media outlet to build an editorial business around this model.
Why this is not advertising
In the classic sponsored-content model, an advertiser buys placement - the publisher releases a piece that ultimately serves the brand's marketing goal. It drives short-term traffic, but it erodes reader trust over time.
Brand Residency flips the model. The brand becomes the subject, not the client. We agree on a shared editorial focus (for example "confidence is in motion" for Rexona, or "coffee culture as an experience" for Good Coffee Festival), and from there the editorial team decides what and how to write. The brand knows what is coming out - but does not dictate the angle, the headline, or the opinion.
The contrast in a table:
| Aspect | Sponsored content | Brand Residency |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks the topic | The brand | Editorial + brand together |
| Who writes the headline | The brand (or its agency) | The editorial team |
| Who controls the tone | The brand | The editorial team |
| Duration | One article / placement | A season - 8-12 editorial pieces over 3-6 months |
| Disclosure | "Sponsored" | Visible brand tag + dedicated residency landing page |
| Goal | Direct conversions | Long-term association of the brand with a category |
How it works in practice
1. Discovery
We start with a conversation. What does the brand want from the category? What are competitors already doing? Is there an intersection between the brand's values and Slow Made City's editorial axis - slow, crafted, conscious? If the answer is "yes" - we proceed. If not - we politely decline.
2. Theme
We define a shared editorial focus that fits both the brand's positioning and SMC's editorial calendar. The theme is always broader than the product - Rexona is "movement and confidence," not "deodorant"; Good Coffee Festival is "coffee culture," not "festival tickets."
3. Content
Editorial builds a thematic arc - a concrete list of pieces with deadlines. The brand reviews the list before production but does not edit individual pieces. Editorial integrity is contracted.
4. Disclosure
Every piece in a residency is visibly tagged with the brand - both on article cards and inside the article itself. There is a dedicated residency landing page (e.g. /en/brand/good-coffee-festival) listing every piece by season.
5. Season
The season ends with a retrospective for the brand - what was published, what performed, what reader signals came in. From there we decide whether Season 2 makes sense (usually: yes, but with a different angle).
Who Brand Residency works for
Not every brand. It works well when:
- The brand has a long-term positioning in a category - not a fly-by-night campaign budget.
- The brand's theme overlaps with one of SMC's four rubrics (Coffee Lab, Cacao & Beyond, Artisan Map, City Rituals) or with general slow-living territory.
- The brand's marketing team understands the difference between advertising and brand-building.
- The budget supports a 3-6 month season, not a one-off placement.
It does NOT work when:
- The brand wants control over the editorial angle. We have respected colleagues in the industry who do sponsored content - they will serve you better.
- The brand category does not fit slow-consumer territory (e.g. fast food, fast fashion, gambling).
- Direct ROI measurement in performance-marketing style is expected.

Ready to become a resident?
If you read this far and most of the above resonates with your brand, the next best step is to write to us. We do not do cold pitches and we do not work through media-agency middlemen. One hour of conversation is enough to know whether there is something here.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Brand Residency cost?
No published rate card. Budget depends on the content volume, season length and the brand's engagement level - ranges from one quarter (3 months) to a full season (6 months). Contact us for a tailored proposal.
How long does a residency last?
Minimum 3 months, average 4-6 months. Long enough to build a thematic arc of 8-12 editorial pieces; short enough that we don't become the brand's in-house marketing agency.
What is included as deliverables?
Depends on the season, but typically: 8-12 editorial pieces (articles, profiles, photo stories), 1-2 video formats where applicable, an Instagram collaboration, a newsletter feature, a dedicated residency landing page on slowmadecity.com, and an optional gamified mechanic (like City Loop for Rexona or Festival Loop for Good Coffee Festival).
How much control does the brand have?
Control over theme and strategy - yes. Control over a specific article's editorial angle - no. Editorial decisions sit with the editorial team, because otherwise we lose editorial integrity. We sign that in the contract.
What is the minimum commitment?
One quarter (3 months) + participation in a kick-off discovery session. Shorter than that doesn't work - we don't have time to build a thematic arc, and the result looks more like advertising than an editorial season.
How is success measured?
Depends on the brand's goals, but typically: unique readers on the residency page, engagement rate on individual pieces, newsletter conversions, and for gamified residencies - registered players + check-ins. We do not promise ad-style impressions.
